152 Currencies Down, 1 to Go: Is the Dollar Next on the Chopping Block? History Says Yes Indeed.
This is the doom loop that repeats since the first coins were minted:
1. Cost of war is passed on to villagers through diluting money.
2. Currency gets debased every single time to finance war.
3. Inflation infects the villagers.
4. This inflation is not some random phenomenon.
5. It’s intentional monetary policy
6. It’s a political phenomenon.
7. Regime collapses
First Minted Coins - Owl Coins
The numismatic name for the owl coins of Athens is the "Athenian Owl Tetradrachm." These coins featured the helmeted head of Athena on the obverse and an owl, along with an olive twig and the letters AOE (an abbreviation for "the Athenians"), on the reverse. The owl symbolized the city-state of Athens and was associated with Athena, the goddess of wisdom and warfare

During the Peloponnesian War, Athens relied heavily on the silver mines at Laurion for minting its famous "owl" coins, which were crucial for financing the prolonged conflict against Sparta. The war was originally sold as a short war (to be around 1 or 2 years but went on for almost 30 years)
As the war dragged on, the financial strain on Athens became immense, leading to a depletion of resources. (and a depletion of Silver specifically)
By the end of the war, Athens could no longer sustain the production of pure silver coins.
Consequently, they resorted to minting silver-plated coins with a base metal core, reflecting their desperate financial situation.
The silver-plated coins produced by Athens during the Peloponnesian War were known as "fourrées" . These coins had a core of base metal and were coated with a thin layer of silver, reflecting the economic difficulties Athens faced as the war progressed
This shift was partly due to the loss of access and depletion of Silver at the Laurion mines.

The Fiat Graveyard
When a Fiat Currency Collapses (
usuallyalways an intentional political act) this fictional passage is how it plays out for the villagers. The Fiat collapse goes beyond being inconvenient and unpleasant, it becomes deadly and wreaks havocmayhem/destructionon the law abiding citizens.
Mateo, a small business owner in Santiago Chile, awoke one morning to find that the currency he relied on had become worthless overnight.
The news spread quickly: hyperinflation had spiraled out of control, and the government had declared the currency void. Panic set in as Mateo realized the implications for his life and livelihood. His savings, carefully accumulated over years, were now meaningless numbers in a bank account.
At his bakery, customers lined up, desperate to buy bread with whatever barter items they could muster, as cash was now useless.
Suppliers demanded payment in fractional Silver or Gold shavings, leaving Mateo scrambling to keep his shelves stocked.
At home, his family's financial security was shattered, with no means to pay bills or buy essentials. The children sensed the tension, their parents' whispered conversations filled with worry. Mateo’s wife, a teacher, faced uncertainty as her salary was frozen, and the school struggled to adapt.
The once vibrant neighborhood market became a scene of chaos and despair, as people had no way to trade goods and services in a desperate attempt to survive.
Mateo’s world, once stable and predictable, had been turned upside down, leaving him to navigate the harsh new reality of a currency collapse.
